An engagement is the promise to marry. "Will you marry me?" these (in)famous words are uttered as the man asks his partner to take their risha (relationship) to matrimony. In the Western world the engagement ritual is based around the gift of an engagement ring from the man to the woman. In Indian culture, rituals and prayers are traditionally performed usually as the question need not be asked, it has already been decided; though in these modern times more Indians are adapting Western style engagements, particularly non-residents (NRIs).

Celebrating the promise

This is a celebrated occasion in most all cultures but the event varies widely from place to place and people to people. The engagement ritual that you chose should be a path that is comfortable to both partners and their families, usually decided through family discussions. Often this leads to a grand celebration, engagement party, where friends and family are inivited to witness the engaging and ring exchange.

Romantic surprise proposal

This is typically different from European culture where the man proposes unbeknown to the woman in a romantic setting thus setting the tone and leaving the woman ecstatic with happiness at the romantic act. Incorporating this style of proposal in an Indian marriage is a treasurable romantic touch, but it is best to seek advice and clarification beforehand (usually from the woman's parents) to ensure it doesn't end up in conflict and misunderstandings from typical conservative Indians.
